Eaton RESA Receives State-Wide Career and Technical Education Award
Detroit, MI – At the Michigan Career Education Conference held January 30-31, 2017 at the Renaissance Center in Detroit, it was announced that Eaton RESA is a recipient of the Career and College Readiness Initiative Excellence in Practice Award for the RESA’s Business Academy program.
The Business Academy program is a collaboration between career and technical education, postsecondary education, and local industry partners to provide a relevant and rigorous business education for RESA Career Preparation Center students.
The Business Academy program provides twelve direct Davenport University college credits as students complete college-level business courses on-site at Davenport University Lansing Campus. Students participate in a project based learning capstone project which includes a career preparation project as well as participation in the National Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) through the Michigan Chamber of Commerce.
Each student will participate in a minimum of three rounds of start-up funding presentations through this experience, including local pitch competitions, investor panels, and a tradeshow. Students will have an opportunity to raise over $15,000 in start-up funding or educational scholarships through these competitions. Furthermore, one team from the class will have the opportunity to go to New York City to compete in the National YEA! Business Competition and will then have a chance to win a seat on the popular TV show, Shark Tank.
Through this program, 30 new businesses will be launched this year, as students file their businesses as legal business entities (DBA or LLC) and file official tax forms for their businesses. Students will also have the opportunity to be part of National Honor Society and Business Professionals of America through the Business Academy.
“I am proud of the Eaton RESA Career Preparation Center staff for their innovative efforts in providing this program to high school students from our service area. We want to thank Davenport University and the Michigan Chamber of Commerce Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) for collaborating with us to create this real-world experience for the students,” said Cindy Anderson, Superintendent of Eaton RESA. “Strong business and higher education partnerships like this are essential to preparing our students for success and developing entrepreneurial talent to support our local economy.”
The Career and College Readiness Initiative Excellence in Practice Award recognizes outstanding practices, programs, or services that demonstrate exemplary support of career/college planning for students (that include their interests, abilities, and skills), promotion of high academic expectations, and linking secondary course taking (including CTE) to preparation for postsecondary education and careers.
