Properly disposing of prescription drugs and locking up current medicines of all kinds is especially important in helping to overcome the opioid epidemic and youth drug misuse.

When medication is no longer needed by the prescribed patient, or the medication expires, it is important to safely dispose of the medication

The best way to safely dispose of medications is by taking them to a secure take-back location, available throughout the region at:

  • pharmacies, including Meijer, CVS, and Rite Aid
  • police stations

Call ahead to these locations to check availability and hours for take-back disposal of medications.

If a take-back program isn't available, the FDA recommends mixing the medication with an undesirable substance, like used coffee grounds or kitty litter, and sealing it in a plastic bag before throwing it away. It is not recommended to flush any medication down the toilet to avoid environmental containment to our area's drinking water supply.

By properly disposing of your medication, you not only contribute to community safety but also reduce the risk of accidental exposure.

Disposing of your controlled and non-controlled prescription medicines at one of these locations will ensure your medicines:

  • will not be stolen from the garbage and cause harm.
  • will not pollute our environment.
  • will deter and prevent misuse and overdoses at home.

Properly disposing of opioid prescription medications is especially important in helping to overcome the opioid epidemic in our region and state.
