A word about using this guide and helpful tips for navigating community resources
- This guide is organized by category to help you find what you need.
- Sometimes one program can help with more than one need. MI Bridges has one application that checks if you qualify for several benefits, such as food assistance and health insurance.
- No guide can include every resource in a community. If you belong to a faith community, community group, or local government, it never hurts to ask about available resources. If you want to stay anonymous, you can ask, “Where in this community can I refer people for help with...?”
- Some communities have mutual aid Facebook groups where people can ask for or offer help.
- For confidential help, call 2-1-1 to learn about community services such as ESL classes, financial assistance, health clinics, counseling, and more. 2-1-1 is free, confidential, available in many languages, and open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- For all services you cannot find here, visit Mi Capital Cares, a 2-1-1 based website that makes it easier for people in Eaton, Ingham, and Clinton Counties to find local resources.
- Don’t give up! Some services have waiting lists, appointments, or applications that take time to complete.
- If you need help right away, let people know. They may have ideas for getting help more quickly. Always call 911 in an emergency.
- We update this guide several times a year. Please let us know if you find incorrect information

How to Get the Most Out of Mental Health Services
- Write your ideas down before sessions: This way, you will not forget important details you want to discuss.
- Ask lots of questions: Ask questions especially if you do not understand why you are being asked to talk about or do certain things.
- Go into your sessions with a positive attitude: Keeping an open mind and a positive attitude is important for your progress.
- Do not be thrown off by note-taking: The care provider takes notes so they can remember important points from your visit.
- Understand your confidentiality rights: Learn how your privacy and personal information are protected by law.

Guide to Using Employer Sponsored Health Coverage and Employee Assistance Programs
- Ask about Employee Assistance Programs: Ask if your employer or Human Resources Department offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). EAPs offer confidential help to employees and their immediate family members for personal problems. If needed, your EAP counselor will help you access your health insurance benefits and connect you to specialists.
- Check the back of your insurance card: Look for a toll-free customer service number on the back of your card. The primary cardholder should call if possible, as information generally will not be given out to anyone else.
- Call Customer Service: You may need to provide your insurance number, address, phone number, or social security number to verify your identity.
- Ask about your specific plan: Ask the representative to tell you exactly what type of plan you have (for example, Blue Cross Blue Shield options vary by employer).
- Ask about mental health benefits and co-pays: Find out what percentage your insurance covers and what your out-of-pocket co-pay will be. Ask about annual session limits or deductibles.
- Ask what services are covered: Find out if you need a referral from your primary care doctor, how many therapy sessions are covered, and if emergency hospital care or crisis assessments are included.
- Ask for In-Network Providers: Ask for a list of preferred or in-network providers, as seeing out-of-network providers may cost more out of pocket. Have the representative email you a list or guide you through their online website directory.
- Confirm with your provider before appointments: Always call your chosen provider directly to confirm that they still accept your insurance before your appointment.
- Inquire about sliding-scale fees: Ask your provider what the co-pay is. If it is more than you can afford, ask if they offer a sliding-scale fee or a discounted time-of-service fee.
- Be persistent: Do not give up. If you need assistance at any point during the process, ask for help.
